Fuego came to us to be my sister’s “pony”. He is a papered Paso Fino but he is excellent at disguising himself as an Islandic. He did not grow up in a herd and had a bit of a time adjusting to the herd life because his “language” skills were lacking. He got pushed around a lot, especially because he liked to nip everybody (horses and humans alike) but wasn’t much of a dominant personality. He soon became the goto horse for beginners and he is our “baby sitter” to this day. He takes great pleasure in not moving forward when he senses that his rider is insecure. Once on the trail or in a group, he is always dependable and mellow, happily taking up the slow rear.

Formerly Kodiak, Odin was rescued by Equine voices as a young colt from a PREMARIN facility in Canada. (If you don’t know the story about PREMARIN, please look it up here: https://www.gentlegiantsdrafthorserescue.org/pmu-industry/ or elsewhere.) He had been living with his dam and a few other rescued PMU mares in a pen and was well taken care of. But he didn’t really have anything to do. We brought him home and started working with him slowly. He was 10 years old and never really had any training. He was quite skittish, which can be a challenge with an animal his size! We are still determined to get him under saddle. In the meantime he is the proud adoptive parent of “the twins” and he is everybody’s favorite because he likes to snuggle. He is some Belgian, Percheron, draft mix.

Who started it all? Of course, we had horses since we moved here but they were all gaited. One day Glen instigated that we get a BLM mustang. We both didn’t have a clue how to treat a wild horse, let alone train one. But Ronin ended up on our property from a local BLM auction. Luckily, he has a great sense of humour and also never tried to harm himself or his humans. He basically taught me what a Mustang is and what I have to do. He sent me on a very long journey to become a horse trainer. Today he is my best friend and riding buddy. Still having his sense of humour and still capable of getting the rider off if he really feels it is necessary. He is the best mount anybody could wish, and I am so happy he happened to show up in my life. With Ronin we fell in love with wild horses and started training them. And with that he has really changed my life!

When I attended a foal gentling clinic in Bend, OR, I was assigned to a very little young foal who was very scared and tried to defend himself at all cost. This is understandable as we learned later, that the babies had been put through a ritual on the reservation where they are wrestled to the ground by young children. By the end of the week the foals were all on their way to their new homes with the basic training we provided. A couple weeks later I got a phone call from the new owners telling me that they could not keep him. Of course, I adopted him on the spot! He had to stay in Oregon for a few months because he was not well enough to be shipped to Arizona. When he arrived, his ne brother Friday had already arrived a couple of weeks ago and they bonded quickly, becoming the “twins” and being silly foals. He started growing a LOT and looks like he will be a tall gentleman. He likes to tease everybody but other than that he is pretty laid back and not much of an instigator. We did a DNA test on him and he has clusters of Quarterhorse, French Saddlebred, and Holsteiner.

Friday is a branded BLM Mustang from Cedar Creek, UT. He basically showed up at the right time to be Keanu’s brother, so they can play together. He had a rough start in life, lost his mom, got gelded, and transported to Arizona at a very young age all within a short time. When he arrived here he was a little sick but already showed how resilient he was, basically telling us from day one that he is just going to take care of himself no matter what. He does not have to be shown where the food or water are, he just finds it. He does what he needs to do to be a happy horse. That’s is approach to training also. He is very willing to learn but he wants to have a say as well in how things are being done. We did a DNA test on him and he has clusters of Caspian, Lipizaner, and Peruvian Paso.

Zavorine is our little Sweetheart. She gets along with everybody. Alpacas are her hobby but if left alone with them she will chase them all over the place – which of course they don’t appreciate. She loves carrots, treats and to be brushed! Sometimes we go for walks with her or do some little exercises in the roundpen. We had kids riding her and she was super sweet with em. But always be prepared; that burro can be super cute in one moment but also extremely stubborn in the other. Who knows, maybe some day we’ll give her a job, like pulling a cart to go to the grocery store….

Trooper is our oldest horse (close to 30) and a Paso Fino. He is the undying patriarch of the group. We don’t ride him any more due to his old age and bony structure. When it comes to telling the other equines who’s boss though, Trooper sure acts like a 5-year-old stallion. He likes to chase other horses around and if put in a pen with another horse of his dominance, there would be a fight to serious injury. With humans he is gentle but stubborn. Definitely a lot of personality and has become the favorite of quite a few of our guests as well just being who he is.

Tango (It Takes Two to Tango) is a stunningly beautiful well-built dun gelding with some Spanish
mustang heritage. We picked him up at the BLM facility in Florence, AZ, where he was about ready to be
shipped out as non-adoptable to early retirement (he has his 4 numbers shown prominently on his hip
and is a three striker). We selected him because of his appearance even though we could tell he was
going to be a challenge. We first worked him the usual way, and we managed to get to halter him. It just
didn't fell right. He did not enjoy the sessions and progress was not smooth. Then we completely
changed to positive reinforcement. It took a little to get him to eat food out of a tub and then the hands
but he took to this training style like a fish to water. His whole body has softened, he will even nicker at
us when he sees as approaching with the training gear.
Tango was lucky and got adopted by a wonderful trainer who sees the potential he has. His new owner
is very familiar with Mustang Maddy’s positive reinforcement training and as the patience and love this
beautiful horse deserves. We are super happy for Tango! He is staying with us and his equine family
while his owner comes to see him several times a week for some play time.
